This neighborhood was considered the best place to live 100 years ago. Your driving tour will show you Craftsman houses built by artisans, as well as Bungalow houses, small, usually one story cabins or cottages. You’re moving to Alhambra Hills, which was settled by those of Spanish descent. Expect to see lots of terra cotta, white, and arches on homes with dozens of windows, some of which are historic.
Burke Heritage Park And Historical Society Museum
To see how early Californians lived, drop into the museum at 1550 Alhambra Rd. You’ll see their clothing, furniture, books, and other things to get an idea how life was back then. When you’re finished imagining, then step outside into the park.
It’s not much more than a large green space, but be sure to bring a picnic lunch and blanket to sit on. At the end of the park is a gated area featuring the most incredible plants and flowers you’ve ever seen.
Ramona Parlor #109 And Museum of California History
The Ramona Parlor is the second oldest in California, having begun in 1887. A parlor in the 1800s was a meeting space for men to get together, much like a men’s club. The Ramona Parlor is unique in that it has its own museum. Many of the earliest members were socially significant.
What was life like in the late 1800s? Could you see a carriage, pictures and wall art from those days, or period clothing? You won’t want to miss a sprig of edelweiss picked in 1603. Have you ever wanted to know what the 1906 San Francisco earthquake looked like? Be sure to study the pictures in the museum.
